UtopiaLawsOkay, I lied, sort of. I said I wouldn’t have a political system, but, as you can see from previous pages, I do have several standards I want enforced. The laws below apply to just the city, Utopia. None of these have an overarching political philosophy. Law #1If you were ever convicted of a sex crime, you cannot live in Utopia. Is it constitutional to pass such a law? I have no idea. If it is, however, I want to have this as law numero uno. This goes double for pedophiles. Sorry, Michael Jackson, you can’t live in Utopia. Law #2Public nudity is legal (though sex in public is not). This doesn’t mean it will be legal in schools or the workplace. Why pass such a law (especially considering I’m LDS)? I want people to have as much freedom as possible. Though it might sound Libertarian, I don’t see how nudity infringes on anyone else’s liberties or harms them, especially today, where anatomical knowledge is commonplace. A free society is a great society. This doesn’t mean I’m going to walk around naked, or any of my family is. Well, hey, what about gay marriage? Certainly allowing gay marriage is a good thing too, then. I’m not even going to touch this one. Gay marriage is mandated by the state, not individual cities. Well, hey, what about legalizing drugs? That’s more freedom. Yes, it is more freedom, but, unfortunately, as Amsterdam has shown us, as soon as you start legalizing drugs, that place becomes a magnet for wannabe junkies. Besides, a lot of this stuff is still controlled by federal and state laws, just like gay marriage. Utopia has no autonomy on this issue. Well, what about nudity? Won’t allowing it make Utopia a magnet for nudists? I doubt it. Nudity on most Santa Cruz beaches and several Vermont towns has always been legal, but you rarely see nude people prancing around there. Utopia won’t be a “nudist city,” just a city were nudity is legal. For another example, take Boulder, where toplessness for both sexes is legal. Take a drive through Boulder during the spring or summer. Do you see any topless women? Female toplessness is also legal in New York City. I worked in New York City (Manhattan) for six months. In that time, I didn’t spot one topless woman. Once something is legal, it’s not all that tempting. Page last updated October 13, 2007. |
